President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment and funding of 12 “Centers of Excellence” in Research by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
Tolu Ogunlesi, President Buhari's special assistant on digital and new media, made this known via a tweet on Tuesday, May 26.
Ogunlesi noted that each of Nigeria's six geopolitical zones will get two research centres which will be situated in the federal universities.
He added that TETFUND will provide operational details in due course.
President Buhari, according to Ogunlesi, also approved TETfund's funding of six Medical Simulation, Research and Training Facilities in Colleges of Medicine.
Each of the six geopolitical zones will get one training facility, the presidential aide noted, adding that the facilities will include molecular laboratories for testing of Covid-19, Lassa Fever and other diseases.
Legit.ng notes that TETfund also disclosed President Buhari's approval of the funding of the research centres and training facilities via its Instagram page.
The new development has been met with mixed reactions; while others commended the president's move, others claim the country does not need more research centres.
King Mufasa tweeted: "We don't need this now, we need them to fund our universities the more, I've been caring for the sick in UNTH Enugu for sometimes now, the future of this hospital is promising, sometimes I wonder what they'd achieve if they had better equipment and better funding."
Ogiesoba Esteem said: "So there is/or was no research facility in federal unis? Another clear case of unnecessary govt spending."
Lawal Abdullahi Giza tweeted: "This is beautiful, God bless Buhari."

In a related development, the Federal Ministry of Education has disclosed that six new federal colleges of education will be established across the country.
Ben Gooong, a spokesperson for the ministry of education, told Premium Times on Thursday, May 14, that the new institutions would be located in six geo-political zones of the country.
Sunny Echono, a permanent secretary in the ministry of education, disclosed in a letter that an inspection was due for May 11 to facilitate early take-off.
The government disclosed that Osun school is to be located in Iwo local government area.
In reaction to the development, the Oluwo of Iwoland, Abdulrosheed Akanbi, commended President Buhari for approving the school.
He assured the federal government that his community would provide the necessary support for the take-off of the institution.
The Nigerian government currently has 152 colleges of education in the country, consisting of 21 federal, 82 private and 49 state colleges.
