COVID-19: Fayemi announces immediate 50% slash of salaries for all political appointees

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state has announced the immediate slash of salaries of all political appointees in the state by 50 percent as part of his administration’s commitment to ensuring the people's welfare is improved.

The governor in a statement signed on Tuesday, April 28, by Aare Muyiwa Olumilua, the commissioner for information and values orientation assured that salaries of civil servants will not be affected.

The 50 per cent pay cut will only affect Fayemi himself, his deputy, and all Ekiti state political appointees down the line.

Fayemi explained that the order was the sacrifice of his government’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of Ekiti state people.

The statement reads in part: “Consequent upon the ravaging effects of the COVID-19 scourge, the global economy has been severely affected, with the depression affecting Nigeria as a nation, and expectedly, our dear Ekiti State.

“As a responsive and responsible government, the Fayemi-led administration has taken stock of our financial situation, vis-a-vis our constantly decreasing receipts from the federation account, as well as our dwindling internally generated revenue (IGR), and has been forced to wake up to the current realities of our fiscal position.”

It was also revealed that the plan for the pay cut will be channelled into the execution and completion of developmental projects in the state.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that in a bid to assist the federal government in the fight against the spread of coronavirus in Nigeria, the senators have made a bold sacrifice on behalf of the country.

In fact, some principal members of the Senate reached out to the senators to embark on the move.

The red chamber took a leaf from ministers in the country who agreed to use half of their salaries in the month for the same laudable cause.

In other news, members of the National Assembly, both the Senate and the House of Representatives, have resumed plenary after about five weeks of recess over the coronavirus pandemic.

Recall that the lawmakers had gone on a break as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country. They have, however, returned to the Assembly complex in Abuja on Tuesday, April 28, to resume legislative business.
