Implement minimum wage before Tuesday, December 31 or risk strike - NLC to governors

- A fresh strike warning has been issued by the NLC to all state governors across Nigeria

- The congress warned that any governor that fails to implement the N30,000 minimum wage by Tuesday, December 31, will have their states shut down

- According to the NLC, the organised labour could not guarantee industrial harmony in any state that failed to implement the new wage

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress on Thursday, December 12, called on all state governor to ensure the implementation of the federal government approved N30,000 minimum wage.

The NLC in its plea warned that non-implementation of the newly approved minimum wage by Tuesday, December 31, would lead to strike action by the congress.

The Nation reports that the NLC in a communique released at the end of its one-day stakeholders' meeting said the congress would be forced to shut down some states over non-compliance with the implementation of the new minimum wage.

The communique stating that some states have failed to set up a negotiating committee between them and organised labour on the consequential adjustment of salaries, it added that the organised labour could not guarantee industrial harmony in any state that failed to implement the new wage.

The communique which was jointly signed by the NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, its general secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, and the national chairperson, Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union Side), Abdulrafiu Adeniji, said the defaulting states include; Bauchi, Yobe, Rivers, Benue, Gombe, Kwara, Imo, Osun and Ekiti.

Others are: Oyo, Anambra, Taraba, Cross River, Ogun, Enugu, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi and Delta States.

"In the event that any state fails to comply with these resolutions on or before 31st December 2019, organised labour would not guarantee industrial harmony in such states," the communique said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the NLC had told Nigerian governors that they were watching them on their activities over the implementation of the minimum wage.

The organised union said that they have set up strategies to monitor state governments' compliance with the payment of the new minimum wage.
