From athletics to music: Meet US-based Nigerian video director Dapo Fagbenle who's breaking barriers

- Dapo Fagbenle started out playing basketball while in the college and he became a superstar

- Daps, as he is fondly called, began a career in video production in 2010 and a music producer in 2012

- Iggy Azalea's Clueless-themed Fancy music video directed by Daps in 2014 has over 900 million views on Youtube

Dapo Fagbenle is a man of many parts; he is a celebrated collegiate basketball player and also an artist and music video director.

Born on February 12, 1986, in Lagos, Oladapo Fagbenle, who is professionally known as Daps is a Nigerian-British artist, video director, and former NCAA athlete.

Daps played collegiate basketball in London and later Connecticut and is a graduate of Campbell University, North Carolina.

After graduation, Daps began his career in the media industry as a video producer in New York and London. He later chose to become a music video director.

His video production career professionally kicked off in 2010 and he began directing music videos in 2012.

In 2013, Daps made a brief detour as he launched his music career as an artist but has since dropped the idea and focused more on creating memorable music videos.

In 2016 he directed the video for Migos’s single Bad and Boujee which went on to become a US number 1 and generated hundreds of millions of views.

Daps' best work can be said to be his stellar direction of Kendrick Lamar's King Kunta music video but his biggest achievement might be writing the concept for Iggy Azalea's Clueless-themed Fancy music video in 2014. The video won a MTV Video of the Year nomination and has amassed over 900 million views on Youtube.

His other nominations for big time awards are: BET awards 2018 video of the year nominee, BET awards 2017 Video of the Year nominee, VMTVbase 2018 Best Hip Hop Video nominee.

Daps has proven not to be a one-hit-wonder as he has directed music videos for the creme de la creme of the world artists.

He has directed music videos of the likes of Stormzy’s Big For Your Boots, Iggy Azalea’s Fancy, Kendrick Lamar’s King Kunta, Willie xo’s Kraze, Wizkid ft Drake’s Come Closer, 2 Chainz and Davido’s Fall etc.

It seems success is a family trait as Daps is also the brother of British actor, O. T. Fagbenle, video producer, Luti Fagbenle, and basketball player Temi Fagbenle. Daps currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
