Xenophobia: Youths stage protest in Kano, urge action from FG, South Africa

- A youth group has staged a peaceful protest against the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa

- The group named Joint Action Campaign Against Xenophobic Attack urged the governments of Nigeria and South Africa to take necessary steps to avoid a re-occurrence

- Leader of the group, Khalid Sanusi, said the unprovoked attacks on Nigerians in South Africa were unjustifiable

A group of youths staged a peaceful protest in Kano state on Saturday, September 7 against xenophobic attacks on Nigerian citizens living in South Africa.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the youths marched from Zoo Road to Audu Bako Secretariat along the State Road, carrying placards with various inscriptions condemning the attacks on their compatriots abroad.

The youths called on the South African government to bring an end to the attacks noting that they would not fold their arms while their fellow Nigerians are being attacked and killed.

Chairman of the Joint Action Campaign Against Xenophobic Attack, Khalid Sanusi, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, urged the federal government to take urgent steps to check the ugly trend.

He attributed the high rate of unemployment in South Africa as the major reason behind the xenophobic attacks, and advised the South African government to tackle the issue.

He said: “It must create job opportunities to the teeming number of unemployed youths in their country."

Sanusi said there was no justification for attacking others simply because of the failure of South African leaders.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that a Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojudu, said the move to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa over the recent xenophobic attacks in the country may not succeed.

According to Ojudu, a former federal lawmaker representing Ekiti Central Senatorial ,between 2011 and 2015, Nigerians in South Africa do not want to leave the country, contrary to what is being assumed back at home.

Ojudu said the Nigerians are at home in South Africa and are not interested in leaving.
