2019 Booker Prize: 3 Nigerian authors make longlist

- Three Nigerians have been longlisted for the 2019 Booker Prize

- Chigozie Obioma, Oyinka Braithwaite, and Bernadine Evaristo were on the list out of 151 submissions

- The nominees on the list were picked for their books, An Ochestra of Minorities, My Sister, the Serial Killer, and Girl, Woman, Other

One of the world’s biggest literary prizes, the 2019 Book Prize, was announced on Wednesday, July 24, with three Nigerians making the longlist.

The Nigerians on the list, among other 13 longlisted, are Oyinka Braithwaite, Bernardine Evaristo and Chigozie Obioma.

This is indeed a great score for the Nigerian literary scene and making appearance on the prize’s list is no small feat.

Evaristo is a British-Nigerian novelist who has written eight books. Her eighth book Girl, Woman, Other was the piece that got her on the list.

Obioma's second book after The Fishermen got him on the list. He was longlisted for the book, An Ochestra of Minorities, a book many readers have praised as a work of genius.

Braithwaite’s My Sister, the Serial Killer, a crime fiction, gave her a place on the list. It is a book that tells a complex story of multilayered relationships.

The 13 novels on the list were all picked from 151 submissions. It should be noted that this is the second time Obioma is getting a nomination, as he got for his debut.

The 2019 Booker Prize nomination is, however, the first for both Braithwaite and Evaristo. Winner of the prize will be going away with a mouth-watering prize of $50,000 money.
