Soyinka slams Nigerian youths, calls them generation of illiterates
- Professor Wole Soyinka has called the present Nigerian youths a generation of internet trolls
- The Nobel laureate said that this generation posts comment on issues they know nothing about
- The literary icon also added that most of them are expecting him to lead a protest when they should carry out an action themselves
Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has described the new generation of Nigerians as illiterates, saying that the country is raising a class of people who comment on things they do not know anything about.
The Nation reports that he said the new generation is waiting for him to lead a protest to Aso Rock instead of doing it on their own.

He advised they desist from posting rubbish online on things they do not understand. He further described the new generation as internet trolls.
Soyinka said sometimes he get texts from youths of the generation and it beats him they are really from them.
“They are waiting for Wole Soyinka to lead a march to Aso Rock. It is about time to get off your feet and stop writing rubbish on the internet about things you do not understand. I do not know how to describe the new generation beyond a generation of internet trolls.
“Nigerian youths are full of sp*nk outside, but when they are inside Nigeria, they are full of gas. We are building a generation of illiterates. They are the first to comment on the internet on issues they are ignorant about.
“When you talk about education, I get texts from the new generation and can’t believe these texts are from the youth,” he said.
The literary icon also spoke about being self-reliant, showing how it has enabled him to confront any organisation or government boldly.

He said: “When I decided to build my house in the forest, I bought a second-hand diesel generator and asked someone to dig a borehole. I wanted to be self-sufficient.
“What I want to pass on to you is that I thought of the possibility of being self-reliant. This entails that I can come to cooperatives with others and demand things from the government by any means necessary.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Soyinka, on Sunday, July 7, urged the youth to start organising themselves for leadership positions before the 2023 general elections.
