Judge threatens to jail Obanikoro over Fayose's 2.2bn trial

The judge presiding over the N2.2 billion fraud trial of the immediate past governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, on Thursday, February 7, threatened to jail Musiliu Obanikoro if he failed to appear before the court.

The Punch reports that the threat was given by Justice Mojisola following the absence of the former minister, who is standing as one of witnesses to the corruption trial of the former Ekiti governor.

Legit.ng gathers that the prosecuting counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Jacobs, had told the judge that Obanikoro, who earlier testified against Fayose, had been hospitalised.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, upon receiving the medical result from Jacobs, had threatened to revoke the operating licence of the doctor who signed the medical result if it turned out to be false.

In her judgment, the judge insisted that Obanikoro must present himself for the trial or risk coming to "court in Black Maria."

She added: "He must present himself before the court on the next adjourned date or be compelled to do so." She, however, adjourned the case to March 18.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, a former minister of state for defence, had told the Federal High Court in Lagos that it was tough accepting to testify against his friend, former Ekiti state governor, Fayose.

He spoke on while testifying in Fayose’s trial for money laundering before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun on Monday, February 4, Obanikoro admitted he returned N200 million to the federal government. He said it was part of funds received from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) during the 2014 Ekiti election.
