Guardiola sweats over Mahrez's injury concern as City battle Chelsea for Community Shield

Manchester City new recruit Riyad Mahrez is doubtful for the start of the Premier League season after picking an ankle injury in his side's 3-2 win over Bayern Munich in a preseason friendly.

The Algerian star, who joined the Citizens in a five year deal valued at £60 million from Leicester was forced out of the game after picking up the injury.

Although, nobody from the camp of City has revealed how long the attacker will be out of action, he was sighted on crutches and a protective boot.

And he might likely miss Man City's Community Shield encounter against Chelsea next Sunday before kicking off their title defence against Arsenal the following weekend.

Reacting to his side's 3-2 victory over Bayern, Guardiola admitted he was in the dark over the extent of the problem: "I don't know [the extent]. It was his ankle. We will see, maybe it is not a problem.

"I'm concerned for many things, for injured players, players who are still not here but I am so satisfied for what all of the guys on the tour have done."

The former Barcelona tactician rested Leroy Sane for the final International Champions Cup clash over fatigue concerns.

And showered encomiums on his young side who fought back from 2-0 down to emerge victorious.

"We came here with a lot of young players and new players. So for them, it will be good for the future.

"It helps them to understand the game. I like to see my players fight for our teammates and play like a humble team," he said.

"You cannot imagine how much I have enjoyed these two weeks with these guys. The young guys have desire.

"They open their eyes and listen because they have their whole career ahead of them. I want to say thank you to them."

Legit.ng previously reported that Manchester City signed Algeria international Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City in a £60 million deal.

The 27-year-old Riyad Mahrez now becomes Manchester City's first signing since the Citizens won the 2017/18 Premier League title.

In January this year, Rihad Mahrez wanted to force a move to Manchester City, but Leicester Ciy chiefs refused to give an approval, and now that he has joined the Etihad club, he will have the chance to play in the Champions League next season.
