Nigerian fans celebrate Argentina's defeat to Croatia in anticipation of Eagles win over Iceland

Nigerians in Russia were full of joy following Argentina's disappointing defeat to Croatia in their second group game on Thursday, June 21.

Goals from Ante Rebic, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic ensured the Croats clinched their qualification to the next round of the competition.

With their last game against Iceland on June 26 an inconsequential fixture, as they are at the summit of Group D with 6 points from two matches.

However, their victory over the Argentinians mean that the Super Eagles have been handed a lifeline in their 2018 campaign.

This means that the 2013 African Cup of Nations champions must beat the World Cup debutants to secure their first victory of the tournaments.

Gernot Rohr's men are currently at the base of the table with no point after their first game, and a win for them after the game will push them second on the table.

Nigeria were condemned to their first defeat of the championship with Oghenekaro Etebo and Luka Modric's goals.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Croatia have qualified for the round of 16 at the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after beating Argentina 3-0 in their second Group D game on Thursday night, June 21.

Argentina went into this game with the hope of them getting a win after drawing their first match against Iceland, but they were embarrassed by Croatia who were superb in this tie.
