June 12 results have been announced by President Buhari - VON DG

- President Muhammadu Buhari was said to have declared the results of the June 12, 1993 elections

- Osita Okechukwu said declaring the election as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria is the same as announcing the results

- According to him, those who did not welcome the idea of honouring MKO Abiola were minority in the anti-democratic hall

The director general of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, has said that by virtue of his proclamation, President Muhammadu Buhari has announced the results of the annulled June 12, 1993 elections.

Okechukwu, who made the statement on Sunday, June 10, said the president's profound proclamation was welcomed by majority of Nigerians, adding that those condemning it were minority in the anti-democratic hall, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng notes that the DG of VON said this while answering questions from newsmen at the annual Igwa Nshi festival in his hometown, Eke, Udi local government area of Enugu state.

His statement was in reaction to the Senate's call to the Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC) to declare the results of the election. But Okechukwu said Buhari announced the results when he officially declared the June 12 election as the freest and fairest in the annals of Nigeria’s history.

He said: “Mr President spiced it with the GCFR, the highest honour in the country he conferred on MKO Abiola and Grand Commander of Order of Niger (GCON), the second highest national honour on his running mate, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe.

“For me, life is about a coin. A coin has two sides. I read a letter from Kola, Abiola’s son, on behalf of MKO's family thanking Mr President. I read statements from the PDP and the APC, congratulating Mr President. This is democracy. We in the majority welcomed it. Minority are in the anti-democratic hall.

“Some people are saying Kudirat should be honoured. Some are saying Humphrey Nwosu should be honoured. I am one of those applauding Mr President and appealing that Kudirat the martyr of the struggle and Nwosu the conductor of the election be conferred with GCON.”
