Nigeria and Ghana search for abortion pills the most globally - Survey

- A new survey has ranked Nigeria number one among the countries that search for abortion pills online

- After Nigeria comes Ghana despite ban on abortion in both countries

- The abortion pill mostly search for online is Misoprostol

Nigeria has ranked top among countries where citizens are in search of abortion pills despite having abortions laws that are some of the most restrictive in the world.

According to survey, Nigeria and Ghana are the two countries with the highest search interest in an abortion pill called Misoprostol. Data of countries who search for abortion pills the most was sourced from Google, BBC reports.

Legit.ng notes that Misoprostol is a medication typically used as a combination therapy to bring about an abortion. This combination is believed to be more than 95 per cent effective during the first 50 days of pregnancy.

Some of the most common searches include: 'How to use Misoprostol', 'Misoprostol price', 'buy Misoprostol' and 'Misoprostol dosage'.

It was gathered that out of the 25 countries with highest search interest in Misoprostol, 11 are in Africa and 14 in are in Latin America.

Abortion is legal in Ghana only in cases of rape, incest, foetal impairment or to preserve a woman’s mental health. But it is only allowed in Nigeria in situations where a woman’s life is in danger.

The abortion laws of the Criminal Code are stated in sections 228, 229, and 230. Section 228 states that any person providing a miscarriage (term it uses to describe abortion) to a woman is guilty of a felony and up to 14 years of imprisonment. Section 229 states that any woman obtaining a miscarriage is guilty of a felony and up to imprisonment for 7 years.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that 30-year-old prison warden, Rabiu Lawal, allegedly put a 13-year-old girl in family way, (name withheld), who he also abducted from her guardian’s house to undergo abortion.

The suspect, a warden at the Jos prison, and also a resident of the prison’s barracks allegedly started forcing the minor since January, which eventually led to her becoming pregnant.
