Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on Wednesday during a live campus event at Utah Valley University, in what authorities have described as a targeted political assassination.
The conservative activist was mid-sentence, responding to a question about mass shootings committed by transgender individuals in America, when a single bullet struck him in the neck.
Footage captured by attendees showed Kirk slumping in his chair as blood poured from the wound. He was immediately rushed off campus by his security team and later pronounced dead.
Rooftop suspect footage raises questions
In the aftermath of the shooting, chilling video footage surfaced that appeared to show the suspected gunman on the rooftop of a university building. The clip, filmed from inside a building behind the tent where Kirk was speaking, captured the moment the crowd of approximately 3,000 attendees dropped for cover.
Above the chaos, a small dark figure was seen rising and moving across the roof of a building across the quad. Separate footage taken earlier in the day appeared to show the same figure lying prone on the rooftop, prompting confusion among onlookers.
“There’s somebody on the roof right there,” one person was heard saying. “He just ran from over there, ran in, now he’s right there.”
Emergency dispatch audio reveals initial confusion
As panic spread across the campus, emergency dispatchers scrambled to identify the shooter. Audio clips obtained by TMZ revealed the tense moments following the attack.
“UVU reporting one individual that was shot, unknown where the shooter went,” one dispatcher stated.
“How many injured do we have?” another asked.
“Just one person,” came the reply.
Authorities described the suspect as wearing jeans, a black shirt, and a black vest. The individual was reportedly armed with a long rifle and positioned atop a building east of the university’s library. No age or gender details were provided.
Two individuals were taken into custody shortly after the shooting, but both were later cleared and released. The FBI and Utah Department of Public Safety are continuing their investigation, with no confirmed suspect or motive as of Thursday morning.
