A Manchester United player has blamed his teammates, Ruben Amorim, amid rumours that the club's bosses have lined up possible replacements in case he is sacked.

United failed to build on the momentum of their 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford and crumbled to a 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.

According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils have not won consecutive Premier League matches since the Portuguese manager took over on November 1, 2024.

The loss to Brentford has heightened the pressure around Amorim, with reports that he could be relieved of his duties soon if results don't improve.

United has also lined up possible replacements for the former Sporting Lisbon manager, including Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, and Gareth Southgate.

However, any decision is being held up by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who reportedly believes a fair assessment should be at the end of the season.

De Ligt blames teammates

Manchester United defender Matthijs De Ligt has blamed his teammates for Ruben Amorim, as the manager faces the race to save his job at Old Trafford.

“Of course, it's always easy to look at the manager, but, in the end, the players on the pitch have to do it," the defender said. "You guys always talk about the system,” he said as quoted by Fotmob.
“That also has a lot to do with focus, concentration, and, if that's lacking in key moments, it's going to make a difference.”

The Dutch defender joined Manchester United in 2023 during his compatriot Erik ten Hag’s tenure as manager and has struggled with fitness problems.

He has been one of the Red Devils’ mainstays in defence and one of Amorim’s consistent performers in a shambolic Manchester United defence.

Amorim has been heavily criticised for his preferred 3-4-3 formation, which has obviously not worked during his time in Manchester so far.

The former Portugal national team player has stuck with his philosophy and is unwilling to change despite external pressure to try something new.

Glasner deploys the same formation at Crystal Palace and has gone 18 matches unbeaten, during which he won the FA Cup and Community Shield.

The Austrian’s success with the formation has raised further questions over Amorim's credentials and makes the former Eintracht Frankfurt boss one of the names ringing at Old Trafford.

However, some pundits and fans believe that a manager with a different approach will suit their team and players better.
