Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford at the weekend has intensified the pressure on Amorim, who has now gone nearly a year without managing back-to-back league victories at Old Trafford.
De Ligt takes responsibility after Brentford defeat
Speaking to Manchester United’s media team, as captured by Complete Sports after the loss, De Ligt did not mince words about the team’s display.
“Really disappointed because all week we were speaking about keeping the momentum going, getting another win under our belt and yeah, if you lose this game, it’s a big blow obviously.”
De Ligt also stressed that the first step for any player is to look inward and admit personal shortcomings before blaming external factors.
“The first thing you have to control is yourself. And if you can do that, you are first disappointed with yourself, and then also with the team and the whole result,” he added.
The defender’s comments are being seen as a strong show of support for Amorim, who is under growing pressure from fans.
Manchester United search for Amorim successors
According to The Mirror, Manchester United’s hierarchy has already identified three potential replacements should they decide to part ways with Amorim.

England’s former manager Gareth Southgate is reportedly at the top of that shortlist and has even held direct talks with INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola are also being considered, but reports claim the club might wait until November to make any move.
Doing so would lower Amorim’s compensation package, as the 39-year-old manager would have completed a full year in charge by then.
This measured approach indicates that Manchester United’s owners are keen to avoid a rash decision despite the mounting pressure to sack Amorim.
A critical few weeks ahead for Manchester United
The coming weeks could prove critical for Amorim’s future at Old Trafford.
After the win over Chelsea, expectations were high that Manchester United could finally string together back-to-back victories.
Instead, the Brentford defeat has reignited questions over the team’s consistency and mentality.
For now, Amorim still has the backing of some key players like De Ligt, but results will ultimately determine whether he remains in the dugout beyond November.
Zidane backed to replace Amorim
In a related report, Legit.ng reported that rumours of a managerial change at Manchester United are growing louder, with Zinedine Zidane once again touted as a potential replacement for Amorim.
The legendary Frenchman, who led Real Madrid to three consecutive Champions League titles, has been without a club since leaving Los Blancos four years ago.
