An Ecuadorian footballer has tragically lost his life after he was involved in a fatal car accident, which killed two other occupants of the second car involved.

The football world has been rocked by the untimely passing of footballers recently, including Liverpool star Diogo Jota, who died alongside his brother last month.

The two brothers passed away in a car accident in the Zamora region of Spain after their car lost control when a tire burst and caught fire on impact.

Ecuadorian footballer dies in car accident

According to beIN Sport, Ecuadorian football has been rocked by the death of midfielder Marcos Olmedo, who tragically lost his life in a car accident.

Olmedo reportedly died in a two-car accident on Sunday morning, killing the two occupants of the other car, who were 30 and 34 years old, respectively.

As noted by Daily Star, he reportedly fell asleep while driving, thus smashing into the other car and killing all three. Emergency responders arrived in time, but there was nothing they could do.

Mushuc Runa pays tribute to Olmedo

Ecuadorian club Mushuc Runa, based in Ambato, paid tribute to their former player after his demise with a statement on their official X page.

“With deep regret, we regret to announce the passing of our beloved player, Marcos Olmedo. Our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones in this time of grief. Rest in peace, Marcos,” the statement reads.

His former club, El Nacional, with whom he won the 2024 Copa Ecuador, for the first time in 18 years, also issued a statement after his demise.

“Today we bid farewell with deep sorrow to a warrior who marked our history and brought back glory with a championship star after 18 years of waiting.”

Olmedo’s wife expresses deep sorrow

Olmedo, 26, was the father of a three-year-old son named Lemarcys with his wife, Evelyn Calvijo, who has expressed her sorrow via a series of Facebook posts.

“Those who knew Marcos Olmedo know the kind of person he was. He taught me that you always have to give what is needed, not what you have left over.
“How do I get over you love of my life? How do I explain this to our son? This hurts and tears my soul. Rest in peace, my beautiful love,” she wrote in another post.
