2027 Election: Groups Seeking to Register as Political Parties With INEC Surge

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that the number of associations seeking to register as political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections has increased to 171.

Sam Olumekun, the national commissioner and chairman of the information and voter education committee of INEC, said that the number increased following the submission of 19 additional letters of intent.

Olumekun added that the updated list has been published on the commission's website and other official platforms of the electoral body, according to the statement he released on Thursday, September 4.

The statement reads in part:

“Since our last update, 19 more letters of intent have been received, bringing the total to 171 as of September 3, 2025. Details of the latest submissions are available on our website.”

INEC uploads newly proposed political parties

He further explained that the review committee, saddled with the responsibility of assessing the applications, has completed its assessment and submitted recommendations for final consideration.

The Punch reported that INEC urged applicants to exercise patience and stay away from actions that could jeopardise their approval.

Earlier, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the electoral body, announced that 110 associations have submitted letters of intent to become political parties while speaking at the second regular consultative meeting with journalists at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, June 25.

How INEC registers new political parties

According to Yakubu, the commission has been diligently processing the submissions in line with the procedures of the law establishing INEC as well as its guidelines and regulations.

He added that all the requests have been acknowledged by INEC, except for six of them that were recently received, and those ones will be acknowledged before the end of the week.

Yakubu's statement reads in part:

“As of Monday, 23rd June 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations that wish to register as political parties."

The INEC chairman emphasised that the handbook that contained the regulations and guidelines for political parties registration was on the commission's website.

Prof. Yakubu disclosed that INEC will later release the full list of the political parties, their proposed names, addresses, their acronyms and names of their protem chairmen and secretaries.

Baba-Ahmed speaks on the 2027 election

Legit.ng earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu's former aide, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, criticised the coalition movement being led by former vice president Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Baba-Ahmed, in an interview, explained that the current leaders in the coalition movement are not different from those in the ruling APC.

Recall that Baba-Ahmed served as an aide at the office of vice president Kashim Shettima before resigning, and he was the former spokesperson of the NEF.
