FCT, Abuja - Lawyer and rights activist Emmanuel Umohinyang has said it would be difficult to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election "because he is delivering results".

In a recent interview with The Nation, Umohinyang, the convener of the Coalition for Good Governance and Justice, claimed that Tinubu has "performed admirably over the past 24 months."

'Tinubu to win 2027 election'

He said:

"Naturally, there will always be differing perspectives on President Bola Tinubu’s administration. But the truth is, you cannot easily dismiss a team that is delivering results, nor can you undermine a leader who has performed admirably over the past 24 months.

Umohinyang continued:

"If there’s any election that looks very easy to win, it’s the 2027 presidential election. There is no real coalition, just a gathering of political figures looking for relevance after losing out on appointments or elections. These are not serious contenders."

He added:

"If the current momentum continues, Tinubu’s performance may very well win him the next election, with or without opposition."

Tinubu vs ADC coalition

Faced with increasing defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigerian opposition leaders have joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

The ADC coalition, led by former presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Vice President of Nigeria Abubakar Atiku, said it is uniting to address what they describe as the country's worsening economic condition under the Tinubu administration.

Aside from Obi and Atiku, the coalition includes former Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai, former minister of transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

While supporters of the coalition remain optimistic of victory in the 2027 polls, Tinubu’s ruling APC dismissed the new party as a coalition of "retired politicians without electoral value."

Coalitions are not new in Nigerian politics. The country's opposition has tried this before. In 2015, the APC itself was born from a coalition that succeeded in defeating then-incumbent Goodluck Jonathan. That coalition broke the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP's) 16-year grip on power, leading to the election of then-opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari. However, observers note that the dynamics are significantly different now.

Objection to statement about Tinubu

Meanwhile, Dr Sulaimon Adigun Muse, a senior lecturer in the department of political science education, Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), in an interview with Legit.ng, disagreed with Umohinyang, asking him not to be too overconfident.

Muse, the president of the Global Academy of Political Entrepreneurship and Leadership (GAPEL), said:

“The comment that Tinubu is unstoppable is an overstatement, which shouldn’t be. Overstatement in the sense that you are talking about politics now, we are not soothsayers, and like I used to say, 24 hours, even three hours to election in Nigeria, is not predictable. The table can turn anytime, anyday. And we saw that in the last election where the Labour Party almost swept some local governments in Lagos state during the presidential election. They now redeemed their image during the governorship election. That is to tell you that such a statement shouldn’t be coming from somebody that is talking empirically.
"It is only when you are talking as a soothsayer, or being emotional or parochial that you will say somebody is unstoppable as far as politics is concerned in Nigeria.”

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that ahead of the 2027 election, Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), reaffirmed his resolve to support a presidential candidate who genuinely wants Nigeria to develop.

Wike, who made a guest appearance on Channels Television's 'Politics Today' programme, monitored by Legit.ng, maintained that sentiment or emotion would not determine his political stance.
