NDC Presidential Campaign Council for Peter Obi Set to Launch Soon Ahead of 2027

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced it is in advanced talks to form and inaugurate a Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections, giving its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and running mate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso broad authority to nominate most of the council's senior officers.
In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Osa Director Esq, the party said Obi and Kwankwaso have held several meetings with National Leader Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and other senior figures within the party.

A full organogram of the campaign structure was drawn up in August and shared with the two candidates for their input, with nominations also received from party stakeholders across the country.
Obi and Kwankwaso to Drive Nominations
The candidates are expected to nominate the Director-General, Deputy Director-General (North), campaign spokesman and deputy, Head of New Media, Finance Director, and Deputy Finance Director, among others.
The Finance Director and deputy, working alongside the party's National Treasurer, will be responsible for managing campaign funds paid into a dedicated presidential campaign account.
The NDC said this arrangement is designed to meet transparency requirements and comply with INEC reporting obligations under the Electoral Act.
The party said it has proposed a campaign timetable but is waiting to finalise funding and fundraising arrangements before announcing a formal launch. The inauguration of the council, originally planned for the first week of September, was postponed due to Obi's travel schedule. The party said it will announce a new date once the candidates submit their remaining inputs.
NDC Warns Against Internal Battles
The party also used the statement to call for discipline among its members.
"There are no battles to fight within the NDC. The common opponent to defeat is the ruling APC," the statement read, adding that NDC candidates at all levels are not running as independents and must work towards a collective victory rather than individual campaigns.
Separately, the party directed all state and local government chairmen to hold meetings with candidates and stakeholders within two weeks, with the goal of producing two lists of party agents: one covering National Assembly elections and another for governorship and state assembly contests. The lists will be reviewed and approved by party leadership, including Obi and Kwankwaso, before training begins.
A dedicated committee to oversee agent appointments will be chaired by Deputy National Chairman (South) Comrade Babatunde Alli, with Vin Martin Ilo serving as secretary.
Members include Dr Yunusa Tanko of the Obidients Movement, Nafiu Dankura representing the Kwankwasiyya Movement, and the six zonal National Vice Chairmen.
Obi was ratified as the NDC's presidential candidate on May 29, 2026, weeks after resigning from the African Democratic Congress on May 2, 2026.
