A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has formally entered the race for the Zamfara North Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections after obtaining his expression of interest and nomination forms.
The forms were picked on 30 April at the Abuja Continental Hotel, where the party commenced the sale of forms to aspirants seeking elective positions.

Pressure from constituents influenced decision
Shinkafi, who previously contested for the governorship in Zamfara State, said his decision to pursue a senatorial bid followed calls from stakeholders and residents of the district seeking what they described as stronger representation at the National Assembly.
According to the statement, concerns have been raised over what many indigenes perceive as inadequate representation of Zamfara North since the return to democratic rule in 1999, alongside complaints about the concentration of the senatorial seat in a particular area of the district.
Calls for zoning and equitable representation
The statement further indicated that residents are advocating the zoning of the senatorial position to Shinkafi Local Government Area, citing the need for “justice, fair play, equity and inclusivity” within the district.
Supporters argue that such a move would promote unity and ensure broader participation among communities in the zone.
Focus on security and development challenges
Shinkafi said his ambition is driven by a desire to contribute to lawmaking and attract development projects to the area, particularly in addressing the impact of insecurity.
He highlighted challenges such as armed banditry, displacement, cattle rustling and kidnapping, noting that these issues have continued to affect livelihoods across the senatorial district.
Backs Tinubu, expresses confidence in APC victory
The APC chieftain also expressed confidence in the party’s chances in Zamfara State, describing it as a stronghold of the ruling party.
He stated that the APC would retain political dominance in the state and secure victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Background and political experience
Shinkafi has held several political roles, including serving as a patron of the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council in 2023, former National Secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Secretary of its Board of Trustees.
He currently serves as Executive Secretary of the Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development.
The statement described him as a grassroots politician with extensive experience, adding that his entry into the race has been welcomed by supporters within the Zamfara North Senatorial District.
