SDGs: Corp Members Storm Asaba Street, Feed Over 100 Beggars
- NYSC corps members in Oshimili South, Delta state, fed over 100 beggars in Asaba under an outreach
- Micheal Chiemerie Nissi, the SDG CDS president, said the initiative was inspired by the rising number of homeless people and was fully funded by corps members’ donations
- The corps members appealed for government and organisational support to sustain such projects
Corps members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta state staged an outreach that provided free meals to over 100 beggars and homeless persons in Asaba.
The initiative, tagged SDG2: Food on the Street, was organised by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Community Development Service (CDS) group.

It aimed to raise awareness about food wastage while addressing hunger among the vulnerable in the city.
Corps members inspired by alarming street conditions
Speaking about the initiative, the president of the group, Micheal Chiemerie Nissi, said the inspiration came from witnessing the growing number of homeless and disabled people on the streets.
“The number of homeless people, beggars and disabled people along the route was so alarming. As SDG advocates, we decided to renew hope by feeding those who struggle to get even one meal per day,” she explained.
Nissi added that the project was entirely funded through donations and contributions from corps members themselves.
“We shared over 110 meals today. Beyond feeding, I hope more organisations will strive to take them out of the streets so they can fend for themselves,” she said.
Calls for support and partnerships
While celebrating the success of the event, Nissi expressed concern that lack of partnership and funding continues to hinder NYSC's CDS projects.
She appealed to the Delta state government and other organisations to join forces with corps members to make the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 feasible in Asaba.
“We need the government and stakeholders to support projects like this so we can reach more people,” she noted.

“Despite the morning rain, the turnout from corps members was massive. We had no sponsors; we pooled resources together because we see it as a way of giving back to society,” Babalola said.
He added that the exercise was peaceful, with no disturbance from hoodlums.
“We appreciate the support of our Local Government Inspector and CDS coordinator for giving us permission to carry out this project,” he said.
