  • Oluremi Tinubu, a former senator, made the appeal to those willing to send her birthday greetings on pages of newspapers, gifts, cakes and greeting cards

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has stirred mixed reactions from Nigerians after seeking donations from well-wishers who are willing to present her with birthday gifts, urging them to convert them to donations for the completion of the National Library.

The former senator made the appeal as she would be turning 65 on September 21, 2025, in a video shared on her media aide's social media handle on Monday, September 1, stating that she has dedicated the day to God, describing the cause as closer to her heart than having a lavish celebration.

She said:

“By the special grace of God, I will be turning 65 years old on the 21st September 2025, and this happens to be a Sunday. This is why I have decided to dedicate the day to God for all his blessings in my life and have a quiet birthday.”

The first lady then appeals to Nigerians to convert their greetings into newspapers, cakes, birthday cards or flowers into money and send them "to the designated account."

Oluremi maintained that the completion of the national library would be the best gift she would be getting for her 65th birthday celebration. She added that her decision was informed by her love for education.

Ebru doubted the chances of the donation:

"Make I hear! A country of sycophants. People would rather spend millions on a newspaper ad than donate thousands to fund a public project."
