Weather Alert: NiMet Lists States in Northern Nigeria Predicted to Experience Thunderstorms, Rain

Thunderstorms expected in top northern states
In its outlook released on Friday, August 29, NiMet predicted thunderstorms with light showers in some northern states, in Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, Taraba, and Jigawa states, on Saturday morning, August 30.

Also, the FG's agency predicted that on Saturday afternoon, thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated in parts of Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, and Borno states.
In North-Central states, NiMet predicted that on Saturday morning, light rains are expected in parts of Niger, FCT, Nasarawa, and Plateau states.
While on Saturday morning, moderate rains are anticipated in parts of Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Kogi, and the FCT.

Southern states to experience light rains
In some parts of Ondo, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States, NiMet predicted cloudy skies with chances of light rains are expected on Saturday morning.
On Saturday evening, NiMet predicted that light rains are anticipated in parts of Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Edo, Abia, Imo, Oyo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa States.
NiMet issues advisory
Residents are advised to exercise caution during thunderstorms as strong winds may accompany rain, leading to difficult driving conditions and slippery roads. Communities in flood-prone areas should remain vigilant.
FG predicts heavy rainfall, flood in seven states
Similarly, Legit.ng reported that seven states and 25 locations across Nigeria have been predicted to experience heavy rainfall for two days, which could lead to flooding.
The Federal Ministry of Environment revealed this in its latest flood alert issued on Saturday, August 23.
According to the outlook, Benue, Borno, and Gombe are some of the states and its communities expected to be affected.
FG predicts 3-day thunderstorms in over 10 states
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that on August 14, NiMet issued a comprehensive weather outlook predicting thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across various regions of Nigeria for three days.
The forecast, released on Wednesday in Abuja, highlighted a heightened risk of flooding in several states.
According to NiMet, morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains were expected on Thursday across parts of Borno, Kebbi, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, and Taraba States.

NiMet releases weather forecast, advises Nigerians
Legit.ng earlier reported that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a fresh weather forecast, predicting sunshine and haziness across the country from Saturday, January 18, to Monday, January 20, 2025.
NiMet released the new weather forecast on Friday, January 17. The outlook envisages sunny skies on Sunday in a hazy atmosphere over the northern regions over the next three days.
