NiMet Releases List of States Expected to Experience Thunderstorms, Rain

FCT, Abuja - The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a list of states where thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected across the country.

NiMet said northern states such as Borno, Taraba, Bauchi, Adamawa, Kaduna, and Gombe will experience thunderstorms with moderate rain on the morning of Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

The federal government agency added that thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in the afternoon/evening over parts of Kano, Jigawa, and other northern states.

The agency disclosed this via its X handle @nimetnigeria on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

According to NiMet, cloudy skies with chances of light rains are expected over parts of Cross River State in the morning.

While light rains are anticipated over parts of Ogun, Osun, Ebonyi, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states in the afternoon/evening.

NiMet advised residents in flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures while calling on local authorities, emergency services, and stakeholders to remain on high alert during this period.

Northern States
⛅ Morning:
Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Borno, Taraba, Bauchi, Adamawa, Kaduna, and Gombe States.
⛈️ Afternoon/Evening:
Thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated over parts of Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Zamfara, Yobe, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe States.
🌍 Central States
⛅ Morning:
Prospects of thunderstorms with light rains over parts of FCT, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Niger States.
⛈️ Afternoon/Evening:
Thunderstorms with light rains are anticipated over parts of FCT, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kwara, and Kogi States.

🌍 Southern States

NiMet predicts 3-day thunderstorms, heavy rainfall

Recall that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecast widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across Nigeria from Thursday to Saturday.

Several states face a high risk of flooding, with alerts issued for northern, central, and southern regions.

NiMet urges residents to stay vigilant as weather conditions may intensify, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

Legit.ng earlier reported that NiMet forecast sunny and hazy weather conditions across Nigeria from January 18 to 20.

Localised thunderstorms and showers are expected in parts of southern states, including Lagos, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours.

NiMet has urged the public and airline operators to take precautions against dust particles and strong winds associated with thunderstorms.
