Tambuwal honours EFCC's invitation

The senator had honoured an EFCC invitation on Monday, August 11, where he was questioned over alleged fraudulent withdrawals amounting to ₦189 billion. He was detained overnight and granted bail the following day.

According to an EFCC source, the transactions under investigation allegedly contravened the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the probe but declined to discuss its details.

Tambuwal’s questioning has intensified tensions between the EFCC and the African Democratic Congress, a major opposition party within the coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Tambuwal said he was honoured to be received by the cheering crowd.

ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi alleged that the anti-graft agency was targeting opposition figures to weaken their ranks. He disclosed that three former governors, all coalition leaders, had been invited for questioning in recent weeks.

“This is a clear attempt to intimidate our members and weaken our resolve. We are determined to rescue Nigeria,” Abdullahi stated.

EFCC refutes ADC's claims

Oyewale dismissed the claims, describing them as “untenable and ridiculous”. He maintained that the EFCC’s mandate was to investigate and prosecute financial crimes without political interference.

The development has also deepened divisions within the opposition coalition. Some members have begun distancing themselves from the ADC leadership.

Obidient Movement National Coordinator Tanko Yunusa criticised the ADC for sidelining allies of Peter Obi in decision-making processes, warning that such actions threatened unity.
