Observers have long noted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s distinctive walking style—one arm swinging freely while the other remains rigid by his side.
This peculiar gait, often seen during diplomatic engagements, is expected to make another appearance when Putin meets former US President Donald Trump in Alaska on Friday, 15 August.

Rather than being the result of a medical condition or injury, experts believe the posture stems from Putin’s extensive training as a KGB foreign intelligence officer.
A 2015 study published in the British Medical Journal coined the term “gunslinger’s gait” to describe the movement, suggesting it is a behavioural adaptation designed to keep a weapon close and maintain readiness.
“According to this manual, KGB operatives were instructed to keep their weapon in their right hand close to their chest and to move forward with one side, usually the left, presumably allowing subjects to draw the gun as quickly as possible when confronted with a foe,” researchers from Portugal, Italy, and the Netherlands wrote.
Professor Bastiaan Bloem, a specialist in movement disorder neurology, described the study as “unusual” in an interview with AFP, but emphasised its importance. “What we are putting forward, but very cautiously, is a new hypothesis,” he said, noting the serious implications for neurological observation.
Trump-Putin Alaska summit to focus on Russia-Ukraine war
The meeting between Putin, 72, and Trump, 79, is set to take place at a US military facility in Alaska, with the Russia-Ukraine war at the top of the agenda. During a virtual meeting with European leaders on Wednesday, 13 August, Trump warned that Moscow could face “very severe consequences” if it refuses to end the conflict.
As reported by Al Jazeera, the Republican leader stated his intention to impose tougher sanctions on Russia should diplomatic efforts fail. Speaking to reporters at the Kennedy Center, Trump expressed cautious optimism about the upcoming summit.
“Now, there may be no second meeting,” he said. “Because if I feel that it’s not appropriate to have it because I didn’t get the answers that we have to have, then we’re not going to have a second meeting.”

High stakes and uncertain outcomes
The Alaska summit marks a critical moment in international diplomacy, with both leaders under pressure to deliver progress on the war in Ukraine. While Trump has signalled a hardline stance, Putin’s response remains uncertain.
As the world watches, one thing seems likely: the Russian President will arrive with his signature one-armed walk—a subtle but telling reminder of his past, and perhaps, his mindset heading into the talks.
