The Coalition for Inclusive Digital Growth (CIDG) has praised the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for its extensive rural broadband expansion, describing it as a catalyst for economic growth, social inclusion, and investor confidence in underserved areas.

In a statement signed by its President, Peter Ezza, and issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the coalition commended NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Dr Aminu Maida, for ensuring that digital transformation reaches deep into rural and remote communities rather than remaining confined to urban areas.

“Connectivity is no longer a luxury; it is the foundation of modern ec

onomic activity,” Ezza said.

He adde:

“By expanding broadband access to rural and underserved areas, the NCC has empowered millions of Nigerians to participate in the digital economy, access online education, improve agricultural productivity through real-time information, and connect to broader markets.”

Investment climate strengthened despite global headwinds

The CIDG also lauded the NCC for attracting significant investment into the telecoms sector despite challenging global economic conditions.

Citing recent data, Ezza said the sector had consistently drawn multi-billion-dollar commitments from local and foreign investors due to the Commission’s “stable and forward-looking regulatory environment.”

“Investors will always go where there is predictability, security, and growth potential. The NCC has provided a clear policy direction, created incentives for network expansion, and upheld industry standards that make Nigeria an attractive destination for telecoms and tech investments,” he stated.

Reforms prepare sector for future technologies

Beyond physical infrastructure, the coalition noted that NCC-led reforms had modernised the telecoms framework and prepared it for future demands, including 5G rollout, emerging technologies, and the growing convergence of telecoms, fintech, and e-commerce.

Ezza added that the Commission’s work in strengthening cybersecurity and consumer protection had boosted public trust, particularly in rural communities where online safety awareness is traditionally low.

“NCC consumer outreach campaigns have educated new internet users about online risks and safe practices. This is vital in ensuring they are not only connected but also protected,” he said.

Visible impact on rural livelihoods

The CIDG said the ripple effects of rural broadband expansion were already evident in increased entrepreneurship, e-commerce in local markets, improved access to health information, and stronger links between rural economies and national value chains.

“Every new base station in a rural community is not just a tower; it is a beacon of opportunity. We have seen young people start businesses online, farmers check commodity prices before selling, and health workers use telemedicine platforms to save lives,” Ezza noted.

Call for sustained momentum

The coalition urged the NCC to sustain the pace of rural connectivity projects, stressing their importance to Nigeria’s inclusive growth, poverty reduction, and global competitiveness targets.

“With the right support and continued commitment, the NCC can ensure that no Nigerian is left behind in the digital age,” the statement concluded.
