Hon. Kolade Alabi David, outgoing Chairman of Bariga LCDA, stated the initiative sought to celebrate those “who have positively projected the name of the community and contributed meaningfully to national development.”

Bariga LCDA renamed eight streets, including Ilaje Road now known as King Sunny Ade Road, and Bariga Road rebranded as Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way. Notable Nigerian musicians such as Olamide Adedeji (Baddo), Abolore Akande (9ice), and Tony Tetuila were also honoured through street renamings.

Ajeromi-Ifelodun street renaming faces ethnic criticism

In contrast, the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area renamed 24 streets, but the decision has ignited ethnic exclusion debates among residents.

Reports from the area indicate dissatisfaction over the replacement of streets originally named after Igbo figures with names associated with Yoruba identity. Streets such as Imo Eze Street became Layiwola Oluwa Street, and Emordi Street was changed to Ayoola Fatai Street.

Residents voiced concerns about the ethnic implications of the renaming exercise, describing it as a departure from the region’s diverse heritage. The controversy has prompted wider discussion on the balance between local honour and inclusive representation in public symbols.

Both councils released comprehensive lists detailing the name changes. The Ajeromi-Ifelodun LGA’s new street names include tributes to entertainers, traditional leaders, and political figures such as Daddy Showkey, Rabiu Oluwa, and Chief Tajudeen Ogunoiki. Meanwhile, Bariga LCDA’s renamings feature public figures and popular celebrities, adding cultural flair to urban navigation.
