Court Remands Nnamdi Kanu in DSS Custody, Rejects Lawyer's Request to Transfer Him to Prison

  • Nnamdi Kanu's lawyers' efforts to get out of the DSS custody at the court on Thursday, October 1, failed

FCT, Abuja - Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been taken back to the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The IPOB leader was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on a seven-count charge, on Thursday, October 21.

Kanu had pleaded not guilty to the charges bordering on treasonable felony and terrorism.

After his plea, the IPOB leader's legal team led by Ifeanyi Ejiofor challenged his detention and sought that he should be moved from the DSS custody to Kuje prison in Abuja, Daily Trust reported.

However, Justice Binta Nyako rejected the application.

She then adjourned the matter till Wednesday, November 10 after which the IPOB leader was whisked out of the court in a convoy of a white Hilux van.

Hoodlums storm Nnamdi Kanu's trial, beat up Sowore

Prior to the commencement of Kanu's trial at the Federal High Court, there was mayhem at the venue following the activities of some hoodlums.

The mayhem started when the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, tried to gain access into the court chamber where the trial was to be held.

While Sowore was discussing with security agents at the entrance, he was attacked by at least 20 thugs who rough-handled him and left the scene.

Ifeanyi Ubah asks court to grant him permission to visit Kanu

In another related development, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah has sought an order of a Federal High Court, Abuja to grant him access to visit Kanu at the DSS's headquarters.

Speaking to journalists in front of the court after filing the application, Ubah said he made the move in order to find a solution to the security crisis in the southeast region.

Ubah, 50, is the candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the forthcoming Anambra governorship election.

Traditional rulers demand Kanu's release

Similarly, traditional leaders in the southeast have demanded the release of Kanu by the federal government.

The leaders under the umbrella of the South East Council of Traditional Rulers urged President Muhammadu Buhari to release Kanu to the Igbo traditional and religious leaders.

The monarchs made the demand in a statement released on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.
