Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has sparked a wave of conversation in the Nigerian entertainment scene after publicly questioning the recent “Big 3” narrative that has dominated the music industry.

In a recent interview, Tiwa Savage boldly asserted that it is time for the industry to reconsider who is considered one of Nigeria's top talents, saying that Tems, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, deserves to be included in that select circle.

According to Legit.ng, the term 'Big 3' refers to the male trio Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid, who are considered Nigeria's most dominant global musical exports.

However, Tiwa questioned the criteria used to identify the industry's 'Big 3', claiming that the narrative ignores the remarkable achievements of prominent women in the Afrobeats genre.

In an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, she questioned the restrictive branding of female vocalists and said that Tems deserves top-tier respect.

“Think about it, certain types of artists get paid more. So, they get the opportunity to spend more on influencers and radio play, so you are going to hear their music way more.
“Also, I feel like it is unfair to have a conversation about the Top 3 and not mention someone like Tems. Are you serious?” she asked.

She added: “Don’t want to say a lot of things because I will be trending by tomorrow,” hinting that she was holding back from disclosing more.

Although she did not mention any names, fans and netizens quickly interpreted her comments as being aimed at the three Afrobeats giants.

The crowd reacted immediately, with audible gasps and cheers filling the venue.

In a chat with Legit.ng AKSTREETZ pointed out that Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy didn’t call themselves the “Big 3” — the industry did, based on their success and impact. He praised Tems for her achievements and reminded people that before the current Big 3, there were others like 2Baba, D’banj, and P-Square.

"The talents never named themselves the Big 3, the industry named them the Big 3, and this narrative is propelled by their growth, achievements and records.
"Saying they have money to pay influencers is quite ridiculous, and if she is saying that, then we need to ask if that’s how she is also paying influencers.
"Tems is setting great standards and examples which must be encouraged and praised. Before Wiz, David & Burna, there were 2face (2baba), DBANJ &Psquare, so there will be another “Big 3” as this comes in with their times of dominance and influence on the culture through their craftsmanship."
