Morality belongs to everyone, not women – Scholar

Olabanke Awelewa, a gender studies scholar and pop culture analyst, has argued that society’s criticism of Mandy Kiss’s controversial record attempt once again shows the deep-rooted stereotypes and unequal standards faced by women.

“The thing is, with or without sexualized publicity, the stereotype against women gets worse by the day, and the bar to achieve morality gets higher for women. In contrast, men get away with the bare minimum, men with not-so-impressive body counts even get judged for failing to express their masculinity,” she told Legit.ng.

According to her, no matter the path women choose, they are often judged more harshly than men:

“The reaction will never stop, whether it is women expressing their innate and wildest sexual desires, getting multiple degrees before the age of 30 while paying no thoughts to marriage, working a seven figure job while finding love with a man earning way less or a woman being utterly devoted to her career, she is still an unsubmissive ẇḣȯṙė who will die alone with no happiness.”

Awelewa explained that she would not give a definitive verdict on Mandy Kiss’s actions but emphasised that stereotypes and judgment will always persist:

“The onus of morality should never be on any gender; it should be a collective thing, but in the absence of that, everyone reserves the right to do whatever they want.”
