It was gathered that the payment of arrears covered the period from July 2024 to March 2025.

As reported by The Punch, a former corps member who chose to remain anonymous confirmed the payment of arrears.

“After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect to see another payment alert. But honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts actually count.”

The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, had earlier assured that corps members who recently completed their service will receive the new N77,000 monthly allowance.

NYSC members react to N77,000 allowance

Recall that the NYSC began paying corps members the new ₦77,000 monthly allowance, but it still falls short of covering essential costs.

A market survey reveals that basic food and transport expenses consume nearly the entire allowance.

Despite the increase, corps members struggle with high living costs, particularly in areas where transport and rent take up a significant portion of their earnings.

FG to pay backlog of N77,000 NYSC allowance

In a previous story, Legit.ng reported that after several months of delay, the Nigerian government announced that it would pay the backlog of the new N77,000 monthly allowance for NYSC members.

Legit.ng recalls that the government announced the allowance increase in September 2024, but despite multiple assurances, the increase has yet to be implemented.

Ayodele Olawande, the minister of youth development, stated that the government would pay the N77,000 allowance to both serving corps members and those who were in the programme when the increase was first announced.
