FG Launches Digital Platform to Monitor Teachers Nationwide

The Federal Government has introduced a new digital portal to establish a credible database of teachers across the country and strengthen professional standards in the education sector.

The portal was officially launched in Abuja on Monday by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) in collaboration with the Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria programme, supported by the United Kingdom.

Education minister hails new platform

Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, described the initiative as a significant milestone in the management of Nigerian teachers.

According to her, the platform will serve as a one-stop system for the registration and licensing of teachers, promote transparency, and enhance accountability within the profession.

“Today, we are not merely unveiling a portal, we are opening a new chapter – a chapter where technology, innovation, and efficiency become the heartbeat of teacher professionalism in our country,” Ahmad said.

She explained that the platform would not only simplify access to professional certification but also provide real-time updates on career development opportunities.

Prof Ahmad notes importance of tech overhaul

Ahmad noted that the adoption of technology is essential if Nigeria is to compete globally in knowledge and skills.

“In an increasingly digital world, where knowledge travels at the speed of light and nations are competing through ideas, skills and creativity, Nigeria cannot afford to remain behind.

To build the future we dream of, we must embrace the tools of the 21st century,” she added.

Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, Ian Attfield, welcomed the development and reaffirmed the UK government’s support for education reforms in Nigeria.

He noted that many teachers across the country fall outside formal structures and require additional motivation to meet professional standards.

“There are lots of different types of teachers — community teachers, volunteers in faith-based education, and those in low-cost private schools.

Many of them are under or unqualified. The diversity means that these systems need to be integrated, they need to be smart, but they also need to be motivated,” Attfield said.

He assured that the UK government, through its Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, would continue to provide technical and policy support to strengthen Nigeria’s education system.

The TRCN noted that the initiative would help eliminate duplication, bring all categories of teachers into a single database, and ensure that only qualified personnel remain in classrooms.

FG issues licenses to 11 new private universities

In another development, Legit.ng reported that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted operational licences to 11 newly approved private universities.

The NUC said the licences were valid for three years, but the universities must meet the required regulatory standards.

The Education Minister, Dr Tunji Alausa, stated that the approval aligned with the Education Sector Renewal Initiative.
