Breaking: Tinubu Announces 2 Major Appointments Amid 'Renewed Hope' Pursuit

  • President Bola Tinubu has appointed Chisom Obih to the governing council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi state

FCT, Abuja - President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, August 12, appointed Chisom Obih to the governing council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi state.

According to a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, obtained by Legit.ng, Obih's appointment follows the death of a member of the council.

The president also appointed Professor Ralph Akinfeleye, a renowned communications specialist, to the governing council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state.

Obih's appointment follows the death of a member of the council.

Tinubu also appointed Professor Ralph Akinfeleye, a renowned communications specialist, to the governing council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state.

Prof. Akinfeleye is the former head of the department of mass communication at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the chairman of the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography/Unilag Radio 103.1 FM and Television.

Formerly a member of the governing council of Yakubu Gowon University of Abuja, Akinfeleye replaces Wahab Owokoniran, who was appointed pro-chancellor and chairman, Federal University of Transport, Daura, Katsina state.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu has also named Prof. Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai as the vice chancellor (VC) of the Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara state.

President Tinubu appointed Hamisu Yusuf Yelwa as the university's registrar, Usman Nakazalle Sanusi as the bursar, and Shehu Aminu Liman as the librarian.

A retired colonel from the Nigerian Army, Prof. Yakasai, is the provost of the College of Health Sciences at Bayero University in Kano. He is also the chairman of the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria and a governing council member at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue state.

He obtained an MBBS at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He later won a scholarship from the European Economic Commission to do his postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom (UK), where he obtained a membership to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and a fellowship at the same prestigious college.

Prof. Yakasai obtained a Master's in Medical Education at the University of Winchester, England, and subsequently went to the USA to pursue the Fellowship of the International College of Surgeons, FICS (USA), and the Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons.

He also served as the director-general of the Hospitals Management Board, Kano state.

FG defends appointments

While some commentators argue that President Tinubu's appointments are lopsided, the federal government said in April that they are balanced.

The office of the secretary to the government of the federation said in a statement by its director of information and public relations, Segun Imohiosen, that all the appointments the Tinubu administration made so far were complied in line with the federal character principle as enshrined in the constitution.

The statement said:

“The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) wishes to address recent insinuations circulating, particularly on social media, regarding the composition of Federal appointments.
“The government categorically refutes claims of lopsidedness and emphasizes its unwavering commitment to the principles of fairness, equity, and national unity. All appointments are made in strict adherence to federal character principle, as enshrined in Section 14 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as Altered)."

Tinubu gives Rinsola Abiola new appointment

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that President Tinubu upgraded the appointment of Rinsola Abiola, the daughter of the late democratic hero and winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, from senior special assistant to the director general of the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre (CLTC).

Rinsola was serving as a senior special assistant to the president before the new appointment.
