Price of Cooking Gas and Kerosene Jump again in September, as Pot that Can Cook Two Meals Surfaces Online

  • A gallon of kerosene has increased by 140.57% in the previous six years, from N640.47 in July 2015 to 1,540.82 in September 2021
  • Similarly, the average price for a 12.5kg increased by 67.68% from N3,676.46 in January 2016 to N6,164.97 in September
  • This is revealed in the National Bureau of Statistics' latest price monitoring report, which was published on its website on Sunday

The cost of a refill Liquefied Petroleum Gas, often known as cooking gas, and its alternative, kerosene, increased in September compared to August, as Nigerians look for inventive methods to save money.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics' latest price monitoring report, released on Sunday, 24, October 2021, the average monthly price for one gallon of Kerosene in the country increased to N1,540.82 in September 2021.

This is a 16.25 percent increase over the N1,325.39 paid in August 2021 and a 25.30 percent increase over the previous year's price.

States with the highest average price per gallon of kerosene were Abuja (N2,766.67), Bauchi (N1,981.54) and Adamawa (N1,975.00).

While states with the lowest average price per gallon of kerosene were Delta (N1218.13), Imo (N1991.23) and Yobe (N1,080.00)

Kerosene price per litre

Also, the report showed the average price per litre paid by consumers increased by 8.59% month-on-month and by 24.83% year-on-year to N434.39 in September 2021 from N400.01 in August 2021.

Lagos (N605.21), Ebonyi (N553.33), and Taraba (N553.33) had the highest average kerosene prices per litre (N526.67).

Delta (N348.15), Katsina (N286.90), and Bayelsa had the lowest average price per litre of kerosene (N229.17).

Cooking gas

NBS report also revealed the average price for the refilling of a 12.5kg cylinder for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) increased by 36.55% month-on-month and by 49.97% year-on-year to N6,164.97 in September 2021 from N4,514.82 in August 2021.

Cross River (N6,944.44), Anambra (N6,897.92), and Ogun had the highest average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (N6,779.17).

Niger (N5,175.00), Borno (N5,100.00), and Osun were the states with the lowest average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (N5,006.25).

Cooking gas 5kg price

Also, the average price for the refilling of a 5kg cylinder for Liquefied Petroleum Gas increased by 8.23% month-on-month and by 21.42% year-on-year to N2,397.60 in September 2021 from N2,215.33 in August 2021.

States with the highest average price for the refilling of a 5kg cylinder for Liquefied Petroleum Gas were, Zamfara (N3,000.00), Kano (N2,900.00) and Sokoto (N2,860.00).

While states with the lowest average price for the refilling of a 5kg cylinder for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) were Osun (N1,902.05), Edo (N1,901.55) and Lagos (N1,858.31).

Meanwhile, marketers of cooking gas have revealed that the 12.5kg of cooking gas currently selling between N7,500 and N8,000 could rise to N10,000 before December.

Viral video shows people in Lagos queuing to buy cooking gas, Nigerians react to new prices

Legit.ng had earlier published a video showing people waiting for their turns to buy cooking gas in an undisclosed area of Lagos state.

While the clip does not necessarily mean there is a scarcity of the product in the state, it stirred up a conversation around its new high prices.

Nigerians shared experiences about how they had to pay almost double to fill a cylinder that was always half the current price.
