Certificate of return: Court to give judgment on Okorocha’s suit June 7

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed judgment for Friday, June 7, for judgment in the suit by former Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, in which he seeks to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue him a certificate of return.
Justice Okon Abang chose the date for judgment after entertain final arguments from lawyers representing parties in the case, including Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN) for the plaintiff, The Nation reports.
Okorocha is, by the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/296/2019 is praying the court to, among others, order INEC to issue him a certificate of return as the senator-elect for Imo West Senatorial District.

It is part of Okorocha’s contention that INEC lacked the statutory powers to withhold his certificate of return, because he was validly elected to occupy the senatorial seat.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that youths of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the southeast on Wednesday, May 22, surrounded the headquarters of INEC asking for the release of Okorocha's certificate of return.

In a letter signed by Olisaemeka Onyeka, the APC southeast zonal youth leader had given INEC till Monday, May 27, to release the certificate, adding that the commission had no right to withhold the document.
Moreover, the protesting APC youths said that if the electoral body failed to do the needful, they would mobilise one million Nigerians to occupy its headquarters.
