Terry G has put the final nail in the coffin of his career

Terry G has put the final nail in the coffin of his career

Terry G has continued to earn himself a queer reputation as one of Nigeria’s most controversial musicians around today, quite a terrible thing, and it doesn't appear he has learned any lessons yet. We analyse his unusual situation here summing everything up in five salient points.

On Sunday, June 5, 2016 the Free Madness singer in a fit of rage slapped DJ Phriz at a comedy show which held at the Shell Hall of the MUSON Centre in Lagos and there have been several criticisms in the wake of his unruliness.

In response to his action, the singer has explained that he felt Phriz insulted him by queuing in another artist’s song while he was on stage.

Terry G had gotten on stage in an obviously intoxicated state and began misbehaving which led the DJ to switch the music in a bid to get him to step down but instead of respect himself and do the needful, he reacted angrily which prompted the DJ to pack up and leave the venue immediately after.

Despite all of this, he is unapologetic. It is widely reported that Phriz is veteran DJ Jimmy Jatt’s protégé and the latter was at the gig when the incident occurred which it makes it all the more amusing seeing Terry G unfazed.

According to a publication by Airwaves Report, the singer claims to have made too many hit songs to be bothered by whoever is hurt by his actions.

The report read:

Will heaven fall if a comedian comes to whisper in my ears and say you're running out of time; round up? That was a slap on my face. Give or take, I got too many hits to care about who cares. I am not a kid in this industry, and am not a one hit kind of artist, why on earth will I walk up to a show if I was not billed and a DJ will be playing another artiste’s song just to chase me out of the stage?”

He then added that he had apologized to DJ Phriz and DJ Jimmy Jatt following the incident.

According to the report, he said:

“Though, I was angry and emotional at the same time and even the crowd complained about the DJ’s behavior. I guess that’s why I did what I did because it can happen to anybody, but I’ve apologized to Jimmy Jatt and Dj Phriz”

Terry G truly has many reasons to be apologetic for his outlandishness. At present, he is a struggling artiste as his antics have failed to get him anywhere within mainstream prominence in the Nigerian and African music industry.

To make matters worse, the Deejays Association of Nigeria has placed an indefinite ban on every form of music that has to do with him including features.

Legit.ng gathers authoritatively that the sanction was implemented to curb the singer’s excesses, as well as serve as a deterrent to all other musicians wont with transgressing the bounds of decency on stage.

The statement from the DJs read:

“The Deejays Association of Nigeria hereby place an embargo on all songs of Terry G, audio and video (including songs he featured in) indefinitely in all events, lounges, bar, radio and every other spot where it is the duty of a DJ to play music Nationwide.”

As the untoward act continues to make the news, we draw five key lessons from Terry G’s action of Sunday, June 5, 2016:

1. Knowledge is power – Terry G lacks understanding of certain aspects of today’s music business. The artiste mightn’t be the most talented today but he has managed to make a few fairly big songs here and there. And that’s what it is, nothing more or less.

In all, he remains a man of average understanding of current industry requirements in several aspects of music-making, lyrical composition, commercial viability and mainstream prominence.

2. Image is everything – Terry G has a terrible public image and makes no attempts at righting his wrongs, which is why he has continued to crash his career by the day. A part of me wants to believe he tried to make the news by creating a media stunt of sorts at Shell Hall, MUSON Centre on Sunday, June 5, 2016 hence slapping DJ Phriz.

But if that was really the idea he bore in mind, he needs to go back into his room and sit quietly, and then spend some hours reminiscing on the degree of damage he did to his already ailing music career. Terry G needs a total image overhaul. As it is, he needs to take a complete break from anything concerning recording and releasing music and then take it all from the basics again. He's already lost it, hopefully he recovers in good time as age is another factor.

In 2013 at Davido’s birthday club party in Victoria Island, Lagos, I witnessed first-hand a troubled Terry G as he tried to get the DJ to swing him into play just so he could get a bit of limelight at the celebration. At some point, he managed to get close to the celebrant, Davido, and attempted a performance of sorts, but in all he couldn’t foist his stuff on the audience and he left the scene before long.

The singer lacks a viable image today and marketing the music has suffered as a result, but it appears there's no one to help him out. Similarly, he has survived near-death experiences on two occasions yet fails to adjust to reality.

In 2010, Terry G crashed his Toyota Camry around Chemiron, Ogba, Lagos but survived. Reports say he was intoxicated, he didn't learn his lesson.

In February 2016, he had a severe accident on his way from the club at about 6am and his Range Rover SUV was written off. There were reports yet again that he was under the influence of alcohol and more. He survived again, still, no lessons learnt. But these are enough signs to jolt him out of his current nightmare, hopefully he realizes soon enough.

3. Dwindled returns is bad for business – It is no surprise that the controversial singer hasn’t made anything close to a hit record in forever which is probably why his actions are so skewed today.

You see, money is the sole of any successful venture and the entire idea behind entertainment is to a large extent for commercial returns and other forms of success. There is a reason it is called show business.

It is against this backdrop that we see a disturbed Terry G owing to his lack of prime time appearances on TV, radio airplay and chart dominance, all of which cumulatively affect show performances and contribute to facilitating sponsorship from corporate brands.

4. Frustration is a problem – Terry G needs to get his acts right. He needs to take it back to the basics, stop burning bridges, learn to be cultured and people-friendly and above all learn to respect the gatekeepers in the entertainment industry.

DJ Jimmy Jatt is too influential a figure to be trifled with and an act of insult on his protégé right in front of him is as much a direct insult to him as anything else of its kind.

Terry G needs a psychologist, he needs to draw closer to God, he needs a whole new publicity team and a manager who is strict enough to control him yet pliable enough to help him manoeuvre the intricate maze of Nigerian entertainment.

5. Power is nothing without control – Let’s assume for a bit that Terry G was the Nigerian artiste on the roll as we speak; let’s substitute him for a Wizkid, Olamide, Phyno or a Davido and see if things would have been any different in similar circumstances. The simple answer is no; because none of these artistes, or anyone else, would have escaped the slamming of the media and critics upon acting in such rash manner on the day.

In sum, Terry G lacks the power of an A-list today yet had the nerves to hit a disc jockey for switching his song in a bid to get him off stage following his way-off-the-mark performance. As a result, he deserves the indefinite suspension he’s gotten from the DJ’s association.

In fact, if there’s any justice in the world, the singer should have gotten the indefinite suspension and a little more because violence under whatever guise must be kicked against in society. While we are at this, he also needs to publicly and unreservedly apologize to DJ Phriz, DJ Jimmy Jatt, the fans and the media as well as the organizers of the comedy show of Sunday, June 5, 2016 wherein he threw caution to the wind, anything else is insufficient and unacceptable.
