Jonathan Ordered Me To Spend CBN Billions On Helicopters – Sanusi

Former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido, has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of wasting public funds on unapproved projects.

According to Sanusi, whose suspension has been surrounded by controversies and scandals, disclosed how Jonathan authorized a multibillion naira purchase of helicopters for the police, and another, a N2.1 billion renovation of the cabinet meeting room in the presidential villa.

Other major claims are:

- the mentioned police project also involved buying other security equipment worth  N19.7 billion;

- Jonathan directed the CBN to pay N3.2 billion for the construction of a new counter terrorism centre for the office of the National Security Adviser, in the context of the other projects.

The details regarding the expenditures were provided by Sanusi in a lengthy statement released early Sunday, which was his response to government's allegation of financial recklessness against him.

It would be recalled that according to the president, Sanusi was suspended on the basis of the recommendation of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, which he said investigated and found Mr. Sanusi as having misspent billions of naira.

However, many Nigerians believe that the real reason for his removal was the suspended governor's reveling report on corruption in the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which allegedly diverted over $20 billion oil revenue.
