APC Holds Meeting Over Amaechi's Screening

The All Progressives Congress senators conducted a meeting on Monday, October 19, in support of Rotimi Amaechi, whose ministerial screening is scheduled for today.

According to The Punch the caucus meeting was held yesterday night at the National Assembly complex and saw in attendance the senators from various geopolitical zones.

Gbenga Ashafa urged his colleagues to back Amaechi who is currently facing strong opposition from the people of Rivers state and from the Peoples Democratic Party.

He claimed that it would become an embarrassment for President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling party if the appointment failed.

There is still controversy over whether the former Rivers state governor would be screened by the Senate. The contrasting information was being provided yesterday on the matter, with some saying that the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions would recommend Amaechi for screening, and the others believing that the exercise would be successfully held as planned.

In another development, Amaechi's representative responded to the reports claiming that the ex governor had stormed Bukola Saraki's residence over the failure of the Senate to conduct his screening last week.

He denied the allegation, characterizing it as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the nominee's reputation.
