APC Senators Drag Saraki, Ekweremadu To Court

Five senators belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have filed a suit, challenging the election of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.

The senators, who have already approached a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, are Abu Ibrahim, Kabiru Marafa, Ajayi Boroffice, Gbenga Ashafa, and Suleiman Othman Hunyuki.

According to Daily Sun report, the aggrieved senators in an originating summons filed by their legal team headed by Mamman Mike Osuman and Dele Adesina urged the court to declare their election null.

The senators claimed that it violated section 60 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and rule 110 of the Senate Standing Orders 2015 (as amended).

They also argued that the Senate Standing Orders 2015, upon which Saraki and Ekweremadu were elected, is invalid, illegal and unconstitutional.

August 5 has been fixed for hearing by Justice Gabriel Kolawole.

Since Saraki and Ekweremadu won the Senate election on June 9, the National Assembly has been in crisis as some APC members were not happy with the results.

On Tuesday, July28,  the Senate reconvened from its three-week break and 81 senators passed a vote of confidence on its embattled Senate President, Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and other principal officers of the upper house.

Following this, there were reports that at least 20 Northern senators, who signed the vote of confidence motion on Saraki, were actually those working against President Buhari in the senate.

In reaction, some Northern senators described the publication which tagged the affected senators as ‘Anti – Buhari’ as wicked,  satanic and unacceptable.
