Zimbabwe's 'Iconic' Lion Cecil Killed By Сruel Hunter

This 13-year-old lion Cecil was called the “biggest tourist attraction” at Hwange, Zimbabwe’s premier wildlife park.

But earlier this month, he was found dead -- skinned and headless. According to reports, a hunter shelled out $55,000 to kill and decapitate the lion.

Cecil was lured out of the national park and was shot with a bow and arrow. The dying lion, who had a GPS collar, was then followed by the hunter for 40 hours before he was finally killed with a rifle.

Cecil’s body was found outside the town of Hwange.

“Cecil’s death is a tragedy, not only because he was a symbol of Zimbabwe but because now we have to give up for dead his six cubs, as a new male won’t allow them to live so as to encourage Cecil’s three females to mate,” Johnny Rodrigues, head of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, said.
