Senator Says N8.64bn Is Not Only For Clothes

The yesterday's report that the National Assembly members are set to receive N8.64billion as wardrobe allowance, became a great disappointment for Nigerians.

This Day carried out a detailed calculation saying that this sum comes aside other perks the lawmakers are entitled to.

Expecting change from the new administration and reduction of government expenses, people wondered why such a huge amount should be wasted simply on clothes.

Following the outrage, Senator Ajayi Borrofice (Ondo North) in an interview to This Day explained that N8.64bn was not only wardrobe allowance, but would also cover expenses on vehicle fuelling, maintenance, domestic staff, personal assistant, constituency office, house maintenance, utilities and entertainment, among others.

Moreover, that money is to be used by the NASS members to organize town hall meetings in various constituencies.

Recall that senator Dino Melaye, reacting to the reports about wardrobe allowance, said:

"I stand solidly on what I earlier said about pay cut. There must be a pay cut to Senators and House of Representative members."

Another respected politician, Ben Murray-Bruce, shared a similar point of view on the situation.

"If APC lawmakers really believe in the "change" mantra, they would not be partakers of the said Wardrobe Allowance."
