Cultism: Police Captures 56 Suspects In Benin
Cultism in Nigeria has constituted a major threat to the academic progress in our universities as the campus, which is supposed to be a centre for knowledge has now become the devil's nest for cultist operations.
Following the high rate of cultism on campuses, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon E. Arase, last week, directed all commissioners of police and divisional police officers of the affected states to arrest and prosecute any youths engaging themselves in cult activities.
Just days after the inspector general gave this order, it was reported that police had arrested 56 persons for alleged involvement in cult-related killings in Benin, Edo State capital.

Punch reported that, the special crack squad deployed by the IGP, apprehended the suspects, which included 11 highly placed persons in the state.
This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja, on Thursday, by the force spokesman, Emmanuel Ojukwu, who said the suspects, who were arrested from different locations in the state, are currently undergoing interrogation.
“The intervention of the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, in the troublesome cultism-related violent crimes in Edo State has started yielding positive results.

“The Special Crack Squad designated for the assignment, had on May 12, 2015 through vigorous intelligence, arrested highly placed persons from different locations in the state who are ring leaders of cult groups linked to recent cult-related killings in the state.
“At the moment, a total of 56 suspected vicious cultists linked to the recent violence in the state have been rounded up by the Squad and are undergoing interrogation,” he said.
The IG reiterated that no criminal would be spared, no matter how highly placed the person is.
This comes after it was earlier reported that no fewer than 12 people have been killed at different locations in Benin City, following a bloody renewed cult war between rival groups.
Out of the 56 suspects, four state government officials suspected to be leaders of different cult groups in the state were also arrested.
