2015: Buhari, Other Aspirants Shun APC Leadership

Efforts of the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a northern consensus presidential candidate failed on Tuesday night as only one of the presidential aspirants showed up for the meeting which held at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.

According to Punch report, out of the four APC presidential aspirants from the northern region, only former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar showed up for the meeting which was convened by the APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Alhaji Lawali Shuaibu.

The other three, Maj. General Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Sam Nda-Isaiah were absent from the meeting.

Giving reason for his absence, Nda-Isaiah was quoted as saying he was unaware of the meeting.

However, no reason was given for the absence of Buhari and Kwankwaso.

Though details of the meeting are yet unknown, the Coordinator of the Atiku Media Office, Garba Shehu when contacted said that the position of the former vice-president   on the issue of consensus was already well known.

He added that he was not aware of any recent meeting where the presidential aspirants met to discuss or agree on the emergence of a consensus candidate.

Meanwhile, the the Director of Publicity, Buhari Support Group Centre, Dr. Chidia Madueke,   said the absence of the former Head of State and other aspirants from the meeting should not be misconstrued for lack of interest.

A highly placed APC member, who was privy to the Tuesday night meeting which was attended by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, and the Zamfara State Governor, Abdulazeez Yari, however, said the mood among those who attended the meeting did not show that the consensus thing will work out.

All the aspirants, even the most vocal advocates of consensus arrangement, are preparing for primaries. The party’s leadership has also set in motion the machinery for a primary election so, I don’t see how the issue of consensus can gain currency at this point,” the source said.

There are already four confirmed Presidential aspirants under the platform of the APC. According to report, the embattled Speaker of the House of Rep, Aminu Tambuwal may be joining the presidential race too.

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rasaq Muse had said three factors should be considered in choosing which of the APC presidential aspirant will be the flagbearer for the party in the forthcoming 2015 elections.
