NOA Mobilises Women For 2015 General Elections

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) says it has embarked on massive mobilisation of women ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Mr Mike Omeri, its Director-General, said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Omeri called on women to embrace the democratic process in the country by participating in politics actively.

He said that the agency would design and implement a programme for the political empowerment of women, peace and security in Nigeria.

The director-general said a workshop to sensitise women to politics would hold in Asaba next week.

He said the ministers of finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; aviation, Princess Stella Oduah and women affairs, Hajia Zainab Maina, would contribute to deliberations at the meeting.

Omeri said the meeting was a follow up to the successful programme of the agency in Owerri, which sought to advocate a new political culture in the land.

The NOA boss said that the constitution of Nigeria provided for equal participation of both men and women folk in the electoral process.

According to Omeri, the decline of women participation in politics is due to contemporary socio-economic and cultural factors.

He said “Do the Right Thing: Promote Peace and Active Participation of Woman in Politics” slogan was part of the series of campaigns by the agency to foster peace and security.

He added that it would increase active participation of women in the electoral process.

Omeri said the target audience for the campaign would be female politicians and civil society organisations, with focus on women empowerment and other interest groups.
