UPDATE: One Person Dead, Fourty Injured In MRS Barge Explosion At Apapa Port In Lagos [PHOTOS]

One person died from the explosion, while 40 others sustained minor injuries in today’s explosion of a Petroleum Motor Spirit barge belonging to MRS petroleum company, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said. The Lagos explosion is believed to have been caused by bangers.

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has confirmed the death of one person in the Lagos explosion. Witnesses said the dead body was recovered after the explosion. About 10 houses – mostly three-storey buildings – were severely destroyed by the explosion in the Idumota area of Lagos. Fire fighters are still struggling to put out the inferno. A spokesperson of the Lagos Fire and Safety Services said that they arrived 30 minutes after the explosion but the crowd at the scene hindered their operation.

The explosion happened at a facility jointly owned by billionaire Aliko Dangote and his brother Sayyau Dantata. It comes on the heels of newly-unveiled borrowing of $1.5 billion by the badly mismanaged Nigeria National Petroleum Company and a fresh release of N161 billion to oil importers by the Minister of Finance.

A combined team of oil importers stole and shared over $6.5 billion in oil subsidy funds last year.

The Nigeria government and its anti-corruption police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, claim to be working hard to put an end to the daylight robbery, but the effort so far lacks substance.
