Update: Grenade blast, not suicide bomber, Police open up about Ebonyi explosion

- The Ebonyi State police command has reacted to the explosion in Afikpo community in Ebonyi state

The Ebonyi State police command has said that the explosion that rocked Afikpo community on Tuesday, May 25, was a grenade blast and was not from a suicide bomber.

According to The Nation, the spokesperson of the Police in Ebonyi state, Loveth Odah said the blast was a result of an accidental hand grenade explosion.

She said the victim of the blast was a Mobile Police Officer on special deployment to Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The spokesperson explained that the MOPOL Inspector mistakenly hit the lead of his grenade which was hanging on his waist with his elbow resulting in the deadly explosion, Leadership reported

Earlier, residents had claimed that suspected suicide has blown himself up in the Afikpo local government area of Ebonyi state.

Leadership reported that the incident occurred Tuesday, May 25, around 11.30am opposite campus 2 of Amaizu/Amangbala primary school.

The huge explosion which resulted from the blast was said to have prompted residents in the area to scamper for safety.

Meanwhile, some hoodlums have attacked the Iwollo Oghe, Ezeagu police division in Enugu state.

Guardian reported that the attackers killed five persons during the raid on the police station on Monday midnight, May 24.

The report claimed the attackers also burned down the police division building completely.

In another news, the second-in-command to the late Ikonso, the neutralised commander of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN), has been arrested.

The Nation reported that the director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, disclosed this in a statement.

The 48-year-old man's arrest came about a week after security operatives stormed his village house in Isiala Mbano where he was hiding but he escaped and a manhunt was thereafter launched to trace him.
