Another Big Blow as Gunmen Burn INEC Headquarters, Attack Police Station in Anambra

- Another INEC office has been destroyed in the southeast region of the country

- The electoral umpire headquarters in Anambra was burnt by unknown gunmen

- Some police officers were reportedly killed in another attack on the security outfit

In another big blow to Nigeria, gunmen have once again attacked a police station and also burnt down an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office.

The latest attack occurred in Anambra according to the police in the state, Punch reports.

The headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission and Police B’Division in Awka, the state capital were attacked on Sunday, May 23, Channels TV added.

This was disclosed by the state police spokesman, Ikenga Tochukwu.

He added:

“Please, I will get back to you as soon as I get the full details.”

Meanwhile, Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, has urged Nigerians to allow free, fair and credible elections in 2023.

Laing, however, said the United Kingdom (UK) would deny visas to Nigerians who disrupt the 2023 elections.

The envoy, who made this known on Tuesday, May 18, in Port Harcourt on her maiden visit to Rivers state, cautioned Governor Nyesom Wike and minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, to cement their legacies on a positive note by ensuring peaceful 2023 elections in the state.

In other news on security, the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali has launched a new security operation to check the separatist agenda of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the southeast zone.

Alkali told journalists on Tuesday, May 18, that the operation codenamed, Operation Restore Peace (Operation RP) was customized to bring back the cherished peace that the southeast was known for.

He made the disclosure at the launch of Operation RP at the Okpara Square in Enugu in the company of the southeast governors led by Enugu state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
