"We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy."

Dr Walensky described the moment as an exciting and powerful one, adding that the new guideline was backed by science.

She cited three studies, one from Israel and one from the United States, that show vaccines work.

Warning/caveats

Amid the exciting announcement, Dr Walensky warned that people who are immune-compromised should speak with their doctors before giving up their masks.

She added that the requirement to wear masks during travel, on buses, trains, planes and public transportation, still stands.

The CDC director noted that the guidance for travel will be updated as science emerges.

Adding that the virus can be unpredictable, Dr Walensky hinted that the new guideline may be reversed if things get worse.

She said that those who develop COVID-19 symptoms, even those who are vaccinated, should put their mask back on and get tested, CBS News reported.
