- There is an excitement in America as the government announced new guidelines regarding the COVID-19 pandemic
- The US CDC said those who are fully vaccinated against the virus can now go out freely without wearing masks or practising social distance
- Nevertheless, the disease control agency issued some caveats and noted that the new guidelines may be suspended if things get worse
The United States' Center for Disease Control and Prevention has announced in a new directive that Americans/residents fully vaccinated against COVID-19 no longer need to wear masks or practice social distancing indoors or outdoors, except under certain circumstances.
CNN reported that the director of the government agency, Dr Rochelle Walensky, made this known on Thursday, May 13, during a COVID-19 press briefing at the White House.
"If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic.
"We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy."
Dr Walensky described the moment as an exciting and powerful one, adding that the new guideline was backed by science.
She cited three studies, one from Israel and one from the United States, that show vaccines work.
Amid the exciting announcement, Dr Walensky warned that people who are immune-compromised should speak with their doctors before giving up their masks.
She added that the requirement to wear masks during travel, on buses, trains, planes and public transportation, still stands.
The CDC director noted that the guidance for travel will be updated as science emerges.
Adding that the virus can be unpredictable, Dr Walensky hinted that the new guideline may be reversed if things get worse.
She said that those who develop COVID-19 symptoms, even those who are vaccinated, should put their mask back on and get tested, CBS News reported.
Walensky also called on the unvaccinated people to go get the vaccine.
