On his part, Abdullahi said the bill is to address religious discrimination in this country.

In another development, the leadership of the National Assembly had been urged by CAN to suspend the bill. The Christian association in a statement noted that the Act was ill-timed.

Speaking further, CAN warned that legalising the use of hijab would cause trouble in Nigeria, adding that those who start it may not be able to handle it.

While noting that the bill is totally unacceptable in a country with multiple religions, the organisation questioned what the sponsors stand to gain from it other than to compound Nigeria's security problem.

Recall that Legit.ng had reported that a new bill had been introduced at the House of Representatives seeking to compel the Armed Forces and para-military organisations in Nigeria to permit female officers to wear the Islamic veil, commonly known as hijab.
